Description
The apartment is located in an old and charming passage way that is fully enclosed, locked at night and weekends. There is no through traffic at all and no parking after business hours. It is therefore private and very quiet, much like a small village. It has a romantic charm, with its profusion of vines and flowers. Many of the buildings date back to the 1800s when this area around the Bastille was the center of cabinetry and wood working for the city of Paris. Some of those trades have survived to this day among our neighbors. But much has also changed, especially quite recently. The new Opera Bastille has come with an infusion of modernity that makes the neighborhood quite trendy. We now have lots of fashionable shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants. Yet there remains, as in much of Paris, a genuine sense of neighborhood that is built around its local parks and markets.
The apartment is a duplex occupying the first and second (French) floors. The entry and stairwell may surprise; they have been left as is on purpose; this is Paris as it was a long time ago. The apartment was fully renovated in 2007; the appliances are brand new, as are the beds and almost all of the furnishings. Modern conveniences include: television and DVD player, telephone, high-speed internet and Wi-Fi.
On the first floor is a large living-dining room area with four windows looking out onto the passage. There is a full though open kitchen with a four burner induction stove and electric oven, built-in washer and dryer, sink and under counter refrigerator. The woodwork was custom built and hand finished. The downstairs bedroom and its en suite bathroom are large by local standards.
The upstairs is effectively a second apartment, with its own sejour, and its large bedroom and bathroom. It even has a private entrance. Though there is naturally more light upstairs, the whole apartment is generally bright. Finally, it is surprisingly and so wonderfully quiet. You fall asleep with no street noise and wake to the sound of birds.
The nearby metro stations are Bastille and Ledru-Rollin. The Gare de Lyon and the AirFrance bus stop are both short walks. As is the Seine, Isle Saint-Louis, and the Marais. Parks include the Square Trousseau, the Basin de l’Arsenal and the Canal Saint Martin, the Daumesnil Viaduct with its Coulee Verte, then further afield the Parc de Bercy and the Bois de Vincennes.

Nearby attractions
There is shopping of all sorts nearby, with a large Monoprix around the corner and the great Bazaar de l’Hotel de Ville only two metro stops away. The local markets are among the best in Paris, rue d’Aligre and the covered Beauvau six days a week and Richard Lenoir two days. Bakeries and cafes galore. Wine bars and restaurants of all kinds. We have our favorites listed in a little guide to the neighborhood.
The apartment is situated 5 minutes walk from the Bastille and the Marais, but also very close to the market Aligre, where you will find nice fruits and vegetables. You will also be able to go shopping in the Rue Saint Antoine and have a coffee in the nice café just at the beginning of the rue de Charonne, the Pause Café.
